The domestic opening weekend of Disney and Marvel’s “Thunderbolts*” brought in an estimated $76 million, making it the third-highest launch of 2025. The most recent Marvel Cinematic Universe film, including ticket sales abroad, brought in an estimated $162.1 million worldwide.

According to Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Comscore, “May is looking to be one of the best on record with the debut of ‘Thunderbolts. Last year’s summer box office, which begins the first weekend in May and extends through Labour Day, had a poor start. Universal’s “The Fall Guy” only brought in $28 million in its first three days. For the first time since 2009, the season didn’t begin with a Marvel movie.

In subsequent years, Marvel films have found it challenging to match the record-breaking success of “Avengers: Endgame” in 2019. There was a massive miss for every box office success; viewers lamented the studio’s inconsistent quality. “Deadpool & Wolverine” outperformed “The Marvels” and “Captain America: Brave New World,” even in the last year.

According to Shawn Robbins, director of analytics at Fandango and inventor of Box Office Theory, “every franchise film has its share of headwinds and tailwinds, internal and external factors that dictate what audience anticipation and response will be.” But after years of widely divergent opinions about many films and streaming programs, “Thunderbolts*” is unquestionably a moment deserving a victory lap for Marvel.
