Authorities in a community near Mount Fuji have cancelled this year’s cherry blossom festival because there are too many tourists for locals to handle. The influx of visitors to Fujiyoshida has caused traffic congestion and waste issues that persist. Some neighbours allege tourists have even broken into their gardens or used them as bathrooms.

In the spring, the location is popular because Japan’s famous cherry trees are in full bloom, with Mount Fuji in the background. The mayor of Fujiyoshida said that the city’s beautiful environment is a threat to “the quiet lives of citizens.” He also said, “We have a strong sense of crisis.”
Fujiyoshida mayor Shigeru Horiuchi stated on Tuesday that the 10-year-old event would end to defend the dignity and living conditions of the people.

In April 2016, officials said they will let tourists inside Arakurayama Sengen Park during the sakura (cherry blossom) season. The pagoda in the park gives you a great view of the city, and there are several places that are great for taking pictures and posting on Instagram.

The Fujiyoshida government started holding the yearly event at Arakurayama Sengen Park with the hopes of making the area more appealing and bringing in more people by “creating a lively atmosphere in the area.
