Trump and Putin’s Call Reveals a Change in the Course of the Peace Negotiations with Ukraine

Donald Trump said he would put an end to the war in Ukraine in “24 hours” last year. It won’t be settled until he and Russian President Vladimir Putin “get together” and discuss it face-to-face, he stated last week. The earth changed once more on Monday.

Following a two-hour phone conversation with Putin, he stated that only Russia and Ukraine could discuss the terms of a peace agreement, maybe with the Pope’s assistance. The US president, however, remains hopeful about the possibility of peace, saying on social media that the soldiers will “immediately start” talks for a truce and the end of the conflict.

Putin stressed once more that any settlement would need to address the “root causes” of the conflict, which Russia has previously said to be Ukraine’s aspirations for deeper European connections. Following the call, Trump stated on Truth Social that Russia and Ukraine will “immediately start negotiations” towards a ceasefire, adding that “the two parties will negotiate the conditions for that.” Trump’s most recent stance on the conflict in Ukraine, however, may be an indication that the US may eventually give up on negotiations.
