President Donald Trump announced that US forces had taken control of an oil tanker off the coast of Venezuela, signaling a dramatic intensification of Washington’s pressure campaign on Nicolás Maduro’s regime.

Trump told reporters at the White House, We have just seized a tanker on the coast of Venezuela a large tanker, very large, actually the largest one ever seized. Attorney General Pam Bondi identified the ship as a “crude oil tanker used to transport sanctioned oil from Venezuela and Iran” and released a video of the seizure.

Caracas called the conduct “international piracy” and promptly condemned it. President Maduro had previously stated that Venezuela will never turn into an “oil colony. In recent months, the Trump administration has stepped up its efforts to isolate President Maduro and has accused Venezuela of smuggling drugs into the United States.

Venezuela, which has some of the biggest proven oil reserves in the world, has responded by accusing Washington of trying to take its resources. Due to short-term supply concerns sparked by news of the seizure, Brent oil prices rose slightly on Wednesday. Analysts caution that the action would put shippers in danger and severely impede Venezuela’s oil exports.
