Following growing criticism of her leadership of the agency, especially her handling of the administration’s immigration crackdown and disaster response, Donald Trump sacked Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem. Two days after Noem was questioned by both Democrats and Republicans on Capitol Hill, Trump announced on social media on Thursday that he would propose Oklahoma Republican Sen.

Markwayne Mullin in her stead. In a new security program aimed at the Western Hemisphere, Trump declared that he will designate Noem as a “Special Envoy for The Shield of the Americas.” Shortly after Trump’s announcement, Noem spoke at a law enforcement event in Nashville, Tennessee, but did not immediately address her dismissal from the Department of Homeland Security. Rather, she reaffirmed Trump’s statement from last month’s State of the Union in her prepared remarks. Trump’s second term saw Noem become the first Cabinet secretary to resign.

Noem’s exit ends a turbulent time in charge of immigration enforcement strategies that have sparked litigation and protests. Following hearings in Congress this week, where she was subjected to uncommon but scathing criticism from Republican members, Noem’s career appeared to be coming to an end. A $220 million (€186 million) advertising campaign that featured Noem and urged those who were in the country illegally to leave voluntarily was one area of special concern.
