In a fire that occurred on Thursday at an orphanage located close to the capital of Algeria, authorities reported that eleven children were killed and 19 others were injured. According to the Algerian Civil Protection organization, the fire started at approximately 3:30 am local time (4:30 am CEST) at a two-story orphanage located in Mohammedia, which is a suburb located in the eastern part of Algiers.
“We heard screams and voices coming from the orphanage that was on fire, and then I saw that the flames had begun to engulf the place, and the girls were inside,” the speaker said. Yassin Ibrize, a local resident, told the reporters that he had run out of the house without putting on a shirt.
During the time when the fire broke out, Ibrize stated that he heard the noise and immediately raced to rescue children who were trapped inside. According to Lieutenant Colonel Nassim Bernaoui, who is the chief of communications for the Civil Protection department, rescue personnel were able to successfully evacuate five youngsters who had significant mobility issues. Additionally, several of the injured were sent to a facility specializing in burn treatment.
Those in charge of security were stationed at the entrance to the orphanage, which had window frames that had been scorched as a result of the fire. The President of Algeria, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, has extended his condolences to all affected by the fire that occurred on Algeria’s National Children’s Day.
“It is with a heart that is resigned to the will of Allah that I learned of the deaths of children and the injuries suffered by other children of Algeria following the fire that broke out in a childcare institution,” said Tebboune, who is currently in Berlin for an official appearance. Tebboune is currently in Berlin for an official visit.
