Mark Carney, the prime minister of Canada, doesn’t seem eager to resume trade negotiations with the United States. In response to an inquiry about when he last spoke with US President Donald Trump over the weekend, he said, “Who cares? A detail, that is. When it’s important, I’ll talk to him again.”
Carney went on to say that he didn’t think there was a “burning issue” to discuss with his US counterpart. The prime minister has come under fire for his seeming lack of urgency, which begs the question of whether Canada is changing how it approaches trade negotiations with the United States.
Carney is considering traveling to Washington next week for the FIFA World Cup draw. Canada, Mexico, and the United States will host next year’s international competition. Sources have told Canadian media that Carney and Trump may meet, but nothing has been confirmed.
This is one of those negotiations with a lot of posturing on both sides,” said Chris Sands, director of Johns Hopkins University’s Center for Canadian Studies. Trump does not want to appear overly desperate for a deal. Carney does not want to appear desperate, so they play off each other to appear casual.
