Due to a volcanic explosion, Indonesian authorities had to temporarily halt operations at eight airports, leaving almost 150,000 travellers stranded. When ash from Anak Krakatau was found in airspace adjacent to Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta International Airport on Sunday morning, the airport was the first to be closed.
According to Transport Minister Dudy Purwagandhi, 712 flights have been impacted thus far. He has requested that airlines think about rerouting some flights to other airports. Late on Friday nite, the volcano began to erupt, causing constant seismic activity, lava fountains, and loud noises in the surrounding areas. Authorities said that two further eruptions occurred early on Sunday. According to the transport ministry, flights to and from Singapore as well as other foreign destinations like Doha, Sydney, and Kuala Lumpur were primarily impacted by the halt in operations.
According to Purwagandhi, testing revealed that volcanic ash had moved to West Java, which prompted the decision to temporarily close other airports. To prevent airport congestion, he asked airlines to expedite ticket reimbursements for travellers affected by flight cancellations and to promptly notify those with upcoming flights.
