Turkish Officials Arrest a well-Known Journalist for Allegedly Threatening Erdogan

According to official media, a well-known journalist was arrested by Turkish police for allegedly “threatening” President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Fatih Altayli’s arrest coincides with a broad crackdown on the opposition. Altayli’s regular YouTube commentary draws hundreds of thousands of views.

After being detained late Saturday, he was questioned, according to the state-run Anadolu Agency, about a remark he made after a recent poll revealed that over 70% of people opposed giving Erdogan, who has been in power for more than 20 years, a lifelong president.

Numerous Ottoman sultans were killed, strangled, or staged to appear as though they committed suicide. As soon as possible, the Istanbul Public Prosecutors’ Office opened an inquiry. According to Halk TV’s website, Altayli denied threatening the president while being questioned. Whether Altayli has been freed is yet unknown.

This year, there have been several arrests of officials from towns run by the main opposition Republican People’s Party. One such official is Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, who was arrested in March on corruption-related charges.

Despite Erdogan’s government’s insistence that the courts are unbiased and politically neutral, many view the trials as politically motivated.
