US President Donald Trump’s 50-day break before potential additional penalties on Russia gives the Kremlin a chance to capitalize on the little victories of the past few weeks, which observers believe are rapidly endangering important Ukrainian strongholds in the east.
It is believed that Russia will launch a more intense summer onslaught in the next days or weeks, possibly with the help of the 160,000 troops Ukrainian officials claim are gathering close to their front lines. In the last two weeks, however, Russia has also achieved minor but significant gains that have put its forces in a stronger position to cut off Ukrainian soldiers in three strategic eastern frontline towns: Pokrovsk, Kostyantynivka, and Kupiansk.
According to analysts, the revised timeline was encouraging for the objectives of Russian President Vladimir Putin. “It also gave Moscow room on the diplomatic stage,” wrote Chatham House’s Keir Giles on Tuesday. “With 50 days to come up with a different proposal, Russia has plenty of opportunity to outmaneuver Washington once more with a diplomatic trick that Trump might be ready to accept. In his most recent stretch of his hypothetical deadlines for Putin, Trump has prolonged Ukraine’s agony for a another arbitrary period.
