Since branding its foundation as the OpenAI Foundation in October, OpenAI has given $40.5 million to over 200 NGOs. The foundation has committed $25 billion (€21.45 billion) to support health research and “AI resilience,” which refers to strategies for reducing the hazards associated with these technologies. It has not stated when it will distribute the cash.

In response to comments from an advisory panel established to provide input on how OpenAI should fulfill its mission to develop safe AI for the benefit of humanity, the company pledged to distribute $50 million in July. Based on suggestions from its board of directors, it stated that it would announce an additional $9.5 million in grants in the upcoming months.

Since the grant money is unlimited, NGOs are free to utilize it anyway they see fit. OpenAI, however, invited organizations to submit applications with initiatives that promote economic opportunity, civic engagement, or AI knowledge. Only NGOs with yearly budgets between $500,000 and $10 million (€429,000 and €8.58 million) were eligible for the awards.

Over 3,000 NGOs submitted for this initial round of funding, according to OpenAI, and the board made the final grant decisions after a panel of outside advisors assessed the applications. There aren’t many grantees who are focused on technology. Rather, they comprise community organizations, dance companies, and journalism organizations.
