Some of President Donald Trump’s top national security officials were quite certain that a decision on military action was imminent when they emerged on Tuesday from a late-night Situation Room gathering to review options for striking Iran.

According to a person familiar with the conversation, the president was touched by recordings from Iran depicting previous executions, graphic sights that appeared likely to recur given the regime’s violent assault on demonstrators. The State Department informed Trump on Tuesday that the execution of one prominent protestor, 26-year-old Erfan Soltani, was originally scheduled for January 14.

During the discussion, no decision was made, and Trump said he would keep considering his choices. However, the source claimed that by Wednesday morning, Trump seemed closer than ever to advocating for a limited military strike after urging Iranians to come to the streets and saying “help is on its way.

Senior Trump administration officials were somewhat taken aback when, a day later, the president announced that “very important sources on the other side” had told him that the killing had ceased, implying that there was no longer an immediate threat of military action.
