NATO military officials said on Thursday that they have not yet received any formal instructions related to the framework agreement on Greenland reached between the United States and Denmark. However, they stressed that they are ready to begin planning as soon as clear guidance is given.

Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone, Chair of NATO’s Military Committee, said discussions are still at an early stage. Speaking to reporters after a meeting of NATO defence chiefs in Brussels, he explained that military planning can only begin once political direction is received.

So far, few details have emerged about the framework deal agreed in Davos on Wednesday night by former US President Donald Trump and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte. The agreement appeared sufficient to ease tensions, as Trump later withdrew his threat to impose an additional 10 percent tariff from 1 February on eight European countries that had recently deployed troops to Greenland.

NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR) also confirmed that no operational planning has started for a possible mission in the Arctic. General Alexus G. Grynkewich said NATO has not received any political instruction to move forward, although internal discussions are taking place on how such an operation might be organised if required.
