According to French financial crime prosecutors, a preliminary investigation into former Culture Minister Jack Lang’s connections to Jeffrey Epstein has been launched. Lang, who played a significant role in the socialist governments of France from the 1980s to the 2000s, is under investigation for allegedly laundering of tax fraud proceeds.
It comes after the Epstein papers, which revealed connections between the Lang family and the deceased American sex offender, were made public by the US Department of Justice. The 86-year-old Lang denied any misconduct and called the accusations against him “baseless” on Saturday.
The investigation will shed a lot of light on the accusations that question my honour and probity,” he told AFP. Lang offered to step down as head of the Arab World Institute, an organization that fosters collaboration and exchanges between France and Arab countries, just hours after the probe was made public.
Barrot, who had called Lang in for a meeting on Sunday, said he had accepted Lang’s resignation and would begin the process of finding a replacement. The case is also being looked into in relation to Lang’s 64-year-old daughter, Caroline. She resigned as head of a French film producers’ union earlier this week.
