As his nationalist party intensifies its anti-EU campaign ahead of national elections, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán told supporters on Saturday that the European Union, not Russia, is the true threat confronting Hungary.

Orbán and his Fidesz party are up against their most formidable opponent since the right-wing populist leader returned to power in 2010, and the poll is scheduled for April 12 only eight weeks from now.

While Orbán has run on the unproven claim that if his party loses, the EU would send Hungarians to their deaths in neighbouring Ukraine, the majority of independent surveys place Fidesz behind the centre-right Tisza party and its leader, Péter Magyar.

Orbán criticised the notion held by many European leaders that Russian President Vladimir Putin is a threat to the security of the continent in his speech on Saturday, comparing the EU to the oppressive Soviet system that ruled Hungary for more than 40 years last century. He referred to Brussels, the de facto capital of the EU, saying, “We have to get used to the idea that those who love freedom should not fear the East, but Brussels.
