The US plan to remove 5,000 troops from Germany was “foreseeable,” according to Germany’s defense minister, while the NATO military alliance claims to be asking Washington for clarification. Boris Pistorius emphasized that “the presence of American soldiers in Europe, and particularly in Germany, is in our interest and in the interest of the US” in an interview with the DPA news agency.
Allison Hart, a spokesperson for NATO, stated that the organization was “working with the US to understand the details of their decision” in the meanwhile. Washington’s action follows President Donald Trump’s criticism of German Chancellor Friedrich Merz for claiming that Iranian negotiators in the continuing conflict had “humiliated” the United States.
Compared to roughly 12,000 in Italy and 10,000 in the UK, the US military’s largest presence in Europe is in Germany, where there are presently over 36,000 active duty soldiers. Additionally, Trump has proposed removing US forces from Spain and Italy.
As part of Trump’s strategy to reorient US military commitment from Europe to the Indo-Pacific area, Washington made the decision last year to cut its personnel presence in Romania. The 32-member NATO alliance is increasingly worried that the US’s most recent move could make the alliance weaker. The continuous breakdown of our alliance poses a greater threat to the transatlantic community than its external adversaries, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk cautioned on Saturday.
