Despite a confrontation between Iran and US naval warships in the Strait of Hormuz, for which both sides accused the other, US President Donald Trump claims that a ceasefire is still in effect with Iran. The US claimed that Iran launched a “unprovoked attack” against three of its warships using missiles, drones, and small boats. Iran “trifled with us today” according to Trump.

Meanwhile, Iran’s highest military command said that the United States had launched “aerial attacks” on various coastal locations and targeted an Iranian oil tanker and another ship nearing the Strait of Hormuz.

The escalation occurs one day after Iran’s foreign ministry declared that it was taking into account a proposal to stop the war from the United States. Iranian forces launched “multiple missiles, drones and small boats” when US Navy guided-missile destroyers were passing through the strait, according to US Central Command (Centcom), which called the attacks “unprovoked”.

Centcom stated that it “eliminated inbound threats and targeted Iranian military facilities responsible for attacking US forces, including missile and drone launch sites; command and control locations; and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance nodes.”The statement went on, “Centcom does not seek escalation but remains positioned and ready to protect American forces.”
