Ahead of a weekend of negotiations meant to expedite attempts to end the war in Ukraine, two of US President Donald Trump’s senior envoys have landed in Moscow. Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff are scheduled to meet in the Russian capital on Saturday before heading to Kyiv on Sunday to have talks with Ukraine.
On Friday, Trump informed reporters that the two were “bringing with them a proposal to end the war”. There hasn’t been any progress in the US and its allies’ attempts to mediate a peace agreement thus far.
The US envoys will meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky separately, according to US news outlet Axios. After arriving at Moscow’s Vnukovo Airport, Witkoff and Kushner were seen being welcomed by Russian envoy Kirill Dmitriev.
A US government plane had flown from the US to Helsinki, Finland, earlier in the day, according to flight monitoring data. The two envoys have visited Moscow several times since Trump took office, but Sunday would be their first trip to Kyiv. Over the past 18 months, Ukrainian delegations have participated in negotiations in the United States.
