After category one Hurricane Lala skirted the Big Island, Hawaii is still dealing with strong winds and torrential rain, which may have caused flash floods that destroyed some homes. As the storm continues to move westward to the south of Hawaii, officials have advised people to be ready for “life-threatening” circumstances, including mudslides, and tens of thousands of residences have lost electricity.
On Saturday, Lala intensified into a hurricane, with winds peaking at 91 mph (147 km/h). In some areas, it could dump up to 35 inches (89 cm) of rain. Josh Green, the governor of Hawaii, announced on Saturday that one person has died in a weather-related vehicle accident on the Big Island, which has affected numerous roadways.
According to Hawaii County, several occupied homes may have been swept off their foundations” as of Sunday at 1:00 local time (12:00 GMT), flash flooding had affected two regions of the Big Island.
The county’s civil defence agency has launched a search-and-rescue effort to locate individuals whose homes may have been carried away by the floods, according to Mayor Kimo Alameda. The gushing water, trash, boulders on the road, and darkness make this extremely difficult, he said.
