Christa Pike, a Tennessee death row inmate, has been rushed to the hospital after an attempt to execute her with two lethal injections failed, her lawyer claims. Her legal team filed an emergency plea to stop the convicted murderer’s execution as it was taking place, stating that “Ms Pike has lost consciousness, still has a heartbeat, and is audibly snoring.”
One of her solicitors told the BBC that Pike, 50, was currently “being provided life-saving measures” in the hospital after receiving two syringes of pentobarbital. Pike was sentenced to death in 1996 for the murder of Colleen Slemmer, then 19 years old. Her execution was the subject of a last-minute legal challenge.
This concluded in the US Supreme Court authorising fatal injections to proceed. Pike was 18 when she and her then-boyfriend, Tadaryl Shipp, beat, tortured, and murdered 19-year-old Slemmer, whom they met at a work training camp for problematic teenagers.
May Martinez, Slemmer’s mother, was among those who wanted the execution to take place. After Wednesday evening’s events, she told NBC News, “It was a mess. The attempted execution occurred at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville at approximately 20:00 local time (01:00 GMT on Thursday).
