Ilham Aliyev, the president of Azerbaijan, arrived in Berlin on Tuesday for his first state visit to Germany. As Europe continues to lessen its reliance on Russian fossil fuels, energy security and the Middle Corridor trade route are at the top of the agenda.

Prior to a larger meeting with cabinet ministers, Aliyev had bilateral discussions with Chancellor Friedrich Merz.
Germany became the second European nation after Italy to sign a joint statement on a strategic partnership with Azerbaijan, along with a number of agreements pertaining to energy, transportation, infrastructure, trade and investment, and science and technology. The discussions were accompanied by a joint business forum.

“I want to thank President Ilham Aliyev,” Merz stated. “You are making it possible for us to get more gas from Azerbaijan. The Joint Declaration that we signed today also addresses this issue. The necessary amount of oil can be supplied by Azerbaijan, according to Aliyev. “This can be accomplished through SOCAR’s trading division as well as domestic sources.

Following the start of Azerbaijan’s gas supply to Germany in 2024 through the Southern Gas Corridor and subsequent connections, Germany has emerged as one of Baku’s newest gas clients. By the following year, Aliyev predicted that annual deliveries would reach 2 billion cubic meters.
