A U.S. appeals court has ruled that the majority of U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariffs are unlawful, igniting a judicial battle that may undermine his foreign policy objectives. Trump levied “reciprocal” tariffs on the majority of nations worldwide, and the ruling impacts further duties imposed on Canada, Mexico, and China.
In a 7-4 ruling, the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit declared the tariffs “invalid as contrary to law,” rejecting Trump’s claim that they were allowed under an emergency economic powers statute. To enable the government to urge the Supreme Court to take up the matter, the judgment will not take effect until October 14. ZZ.
Former President Donald Trump criticised the Truth Social verdict and the appeals court ruling, warning, “If allowed to stand, this decision would literally destroy the United States of America. In a letter, Trump argued that the appeals court had erred in ruling against his tariff policies. “Today, a highly partisan appeals court incorrectly said that our tariffs should be removed, but they know the United States will prevail in the end,” he wrote.
He added that eliminating the tariffs would be disastrous for the country. “It would be catastrophic if these tariffs were ever removed. We need strength without them; we would be financially weakened,” Trump said.
