According to Ed Miliband, the UK is considering “any options” to protect vital oil transport routes via the Strait of Hormuz, including collaborating with the US and allies. It comes after US President Donald Trump pushed nations like the UK, China, and France to send warships to the waterway and threatened to open the channel “one way or another” on Saturday.
The energy secretary told the BBC that it was “very important” that the strait be made safe for shipping, but he would not elaborate on the possibilities the government was considering. Global supply chains and energy prices have been severely impacted by Iran’s successful blockade of the strait, one of the most significant maritime routes in the world.
Iran will keep barring the strait in order to exert political and economic pressure on the United States, according to a statement credited to Mojtaba Khamenei, the country’s new Supreme Leader. A number of ships are reportedly assaulted as they tried to travel through the narrow strait, which typically carries 20% of the world’s oil, as the US and Israel’s war with Iran moves into its third week. Additionally, there are worries that Iran has attempted to impede ships by planting mines in the passage.
