US President Donald Trump demanded the cessation of commerce with Spain at NATO summit in Ankara on Wednesday. At a joint press conference with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, Trump said: “Spain is a terrible partner in NATO” referring to Spain’s failure to agree to NATO’s new defense budget objective of 5% of GDP. The president continued that “Spain is a wasted cause and we don’t want to do any business with them”, telling Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to stop commerce with Spain at the moment.

I don’t want to do any trade with them, alright?” “Yes sir,” Bessent answered, turning toward him. Then Trump continued, “Get it done right away. Don’t even speak to them. They’re a lost cause. They’re awful people. They earn so much money with us, and we’re going to make sure they make a lot less.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez’s office rejected the comments as “business as usual” and said it had no intention of altering Spain’s “excellent” ties with Washington, Reuters reported. It also pointed to Spain’s trade deficit with the US, stressing that individual EU nations cannot be targeted in trade policy as part of the EU customs union.
