According to local authorities, a civilian plane transporting skydivers crashed near the eastern French town of Tomblaine, killing eleven persons. Five instructors and five individuals getting ready for their first skydiving were among the ten passengers that perished along with the pilot.
At approximately 11:00 local time (10:00 BST), the aircraft, which was being used by a parachute school, abruptly crashed after taking off from Nancy-Essey airfield. According to French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez, the Paris prosecutor’s office has started looking into what caused the incident.
According to Nuñez, several of the victims’ family were there at the airfield to witness the first-ever tandem jumps when the tragedy occurred. According to Mathieu Klein, the mayor of the neighboring city of Nancy, some of the victims passed away “in full view of their loved ones. Those family members had experienced “considerable psychological trauma,” according to Chaynesse Khirouni, president of Meurthe-et-Moselle’s eastern department.
