According to a statement from South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff, North Korea fired several ballistic missiles at its eastern waters on Sunday. According to the statement, numerous ballistic missile launches were detected early on Sunday from North Korea’s capital region. The missiles flew around 900 kilometers, and South Korean and US agencies were analyzing the launch specifics.

The launches were in violation of UN Security Council resolutions that prohibit North Korea from engaging in any missile activity, according to South Korea’s Defense Ministry. It called on North Korea to immediately stop its provocative activities and react to South Korea’s efforts to resume negotiations and bring peace back to the Korean Peninsula.

The missile launches came hours before South Korean President Lee Jae Myung traveled for China for a summit with President Xi Jinping. Lee’s office stated that he would ask China, North Korea’s main commercial partner and ally, to play “a constructive role” in efforts to advance peace on the Korean Peninsula during the four-day visit.

The launches were North Korea’s most recent weapons display in recent weeks. In advance of its next ruling party conference, which will be the first in five years, experts think North Korea wants to highlight or examine its accomplishments in the defense sector.
