Gunmen opened fire on a religious gathering in the central Mexican city of Irapuato overnight, killing at least 12 people in the Guanajuato state, according to officials on Wednesday. Twenty more people were hospitalised with gunshot wounds, according to the Guanajuato attorney general’s office. According to the office, one of the deceased was a 17-year-old child.
According to the AP, the event happened during the nighttime celebration of St. John the Baptist, a Catholic holiday in Mexico, when people were dancing and drinking on the street. People fled to seek cover and avoid the gunshots as soon as the shooting began, according to recordings that have gone viral online.
The horrific shooting at Irapuato was denounced by Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, who also said that an inquiry was underway. It is really regrettable what transpired. There is an investigation going on,” Sheinbaum stated.
Prior to the horrific shooting, a fictitious video that was making the rounds on social media purportedly showed people dancing on a housing complex patio while background music played. The video’s veracity is still unknown, though.
