Following the Migrant Crossings in Ceuta, The EU has Called for Tighter Borders

Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, has urged for “united action” on border security following last week’s chaotic flow of tens of thousands of Moroccan migrants into the Spanish exclave of Ceuta.

Spain believes that approximately 69,500 migrants have returned to Morocco, above the earlier estimate of 50,000. The official death toll on the Spanish side of the border is 72, with 11 killed on the Moroccan side.

On Tuesday, EU interior ministers will hold emergency video conference talks to tackle the problem. The images in Ceuta have strained relations between some of the EU’s 27 member nations. Von der Leyen congratulated Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez in a letter for his “swift handling” of the crisis.

However, she stated: “From this incident, it is clear that we must do more to further strengthen our borders at critical points.”In response to the Ceuta crossings, Italy briefly terminated its Schengen agreement with Spain. The Schengen Agreement eliminates border checks and today includes over 450 million people from 29 European countries.
