An Indian automotive company is embroiled in a bitter succession dispute following the unexpected death of an Indian entrepreneur in June. On June 12, 53-year-old Sunjay Kapur had a heart attack while playing polo in Surrey, UK. He was the heir to his father’s $3.6 billion (£2.7 billion) business company, Sona Comstar. The company, among India’s top auto component makers, a global footprint with 10 plants spread across India, China, Mexico and the US.

A polo enthusiast, Kapur moved in the elite social circles of Indian capital Delhi, and reportedly shared a friendship with Prince William. Prior to his 2017 marriage to Priya Sachdev, a former model and businesswoman, he was married three times: first to designer Nandita Mahtani, then to Bollywood star Karisma Kapoor from the 1990s.

However, the media has been speculating about Kapur and his family for weeks following his passing because to the succession issue. Kapur’s mother, Rani Kapur, the previous chairman of Sona Comstar, is at the center of everything.

Rani Kapur questioned the Sona Comstar board in a letter dated July 24 regarding her son’s passing and subsequent appointments made by the firm. She said that Kapur’s death occurred under “highly suspicious and unexplained circumstances” in the letter, which the BBC has seen.
