On Sunday, hundreds of people demonstrated in Valencia’s streets, calling for the resignation of Carlos Mazón, the regional president, and his administration for their handling of the disastrous flooding that claimed hundreds of lives.

At least 224 individuals lost their lives as a result of the flooding, which also left others homeless and damaged property worth millions of euros. More than 200 social groups in Valencia planned the protest on Saturday. The rally’s organisers also aimed to draw attention to what they say was the regional government’s carelessness in the days after the disaster.

According to the protesters, the local authorities have no meaningful plans for rebuilding the educational infrastructure. Following his administration’s failure to provide flood advisories to residents’ mobile phones until hours after the flooding began in October of last year, Mazón is under tremendous pressure.

The conservative Popular Party’s Mazón is also facing criticism for what many see as the disorganised and tardy reaction to the natural calamity. In several of the worst-affected communities on the southern fringes of Valencia, thousands of volunteers were the first people on the ground. The regional administration requested that central authorities send in thousands of army and police reinforcements, but it took days for officials to mobilise them.
