More Than 1,000 International Students Fear Deportation as a Result of Visa Cancellations, Which Cause Anxiety

Initially, a few students each day started to contact the bar organisation for immigration attorneys with questions. These were international students studying in the United States who learnt in early April that their legal status had been abruptly revoked. They were not aware of any deportable offences committed by any of the students. The calls have started coming in lately. Hundreds of students have been phoning to ask for guidance on what to do after learning that their legal status has been revoked.

Matthew Maiona, an immigration lawyer in Boston who receives around six calls a day from anxious overseas students, said, “We thought it was going to be unusual.” However, it appears to be approaching very quickly presently.

Colleges across the country have been taken aback by the federal government’s rapid and extensive efforts to revoke the legal status of overseas students. As universities of all sizes—from small liberal arts colleges to huge public research institutions to prominent private universities—discover one status termination after another among their students, very few areas of higher education remain unaffected.

An Associated Press investigation of university statements, correspondence with school officials, and court records shows that since late March, at least 1,024 students at 160 schools, universities, and university systems have had their visas revoked or their legal status terminated. According to advocacy groups gathering college records, the crackdown may affect hundreds more students.
