Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a short Easter truce in the war with Ukraine on Saturday. He stated that all Russian military operations will cease from 6 p.m. Moscow time (1500 GMT) on Saturday until midnight on Sunday (2100 GMT). The declaration was made as both sides reported ongoing artillery and drone assaults and Russian forces reported new advances in cross-border combat.
In light of humanitarian concerns, the Russian side announces an Easter truce tonight from 18:00 to 0:00 on Sunday and Monday. During a televised meeting with Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov, Putin declared, “I order that all military actions be stopped for this period,” according to the Kremlin’s press office, as Reuters reported.
“We anticipate that the Ukrainian side will emulate us,” he continued. “At the same time, our troops must be prepared to repel any aggressive actions by the enemy and potential violations of the truce.
Additionally, the Russian Defence Ministry stressed that Russian soldiers would only follow the truce if Ukraine reciprocated. The Russian military organisation will abide by the humanitarian ceasefire, provided that it is implemented. Putin said there had been “more than 100” instances of Ukraine routinely breaking a previous ban on attacks against energy infrastructure. Throughout the ceasefire, he directed Russian soldiers to stay vigilant in case Ukraine launched an attack.
