Stellantis announced on Tuesday that it is recalling about 375,000 plug-in hybrid Jeep Wrangler and Grand Cherokee SUVs worldwide due to a battery defect linked to 19 fire incidents. The company urged owners to park their vehicles outdoors and avoid charging them until repairs are completed. The recall affects certain 2020–2025 Jeep Wrangler 4xe and 2022–2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe models. Stellantis said it is preparing a repair solution, which will be available soon.
According to reports filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), there have been 19 fires and one injury related to the issue. Around 320,000 of the affected SUVs are in the United States. Samsung SDI supplied the faulty batteries.
Investigations by Stellantis and Samsung SDI revealed that a fire earlier this year stemmed from the same defect behind a 2024 recall of 154,000 plug-in hybrid Jeep vehicles, which had resulted in two reported injuries. The NHTSA noted that vehicles repaired in the 2023 and 2024 recalls will also require another fix.
Stellantis confirmed nine fires occurred in vehicles that had previously received software updates from the 2024 recall, while ten fires were reported in models not included in that earlier action. Samsung SDI has not yet commented on the latest recall.
