According to public broadcaster NHK, voters gave her ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) a sizable majority on Sunday, fulfilling Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s risky gamble on a snap election.
In Japan’s lower house, the LDP won over 310 of the 465 seats after an election presented as a referendum on Takaichi herself. This is the first time since World War II that a single party has obtained a two-thirds majority. In total, the ruling coalition gained almost 340 seats.
Takaichi expressed gratitude to the voters who “braved the cold and walked through the snowy roads to cast their votes” in an interview with NHK. I argued for responsible, proactive fiscal policy that would drastically change economic and fiscal policy, which is why I wanted the voters to give me a mandate,” she continued. Since becoming the first woman to lead Japan less than four months ago, the staunch conservative, who has the support of US President Donald Trump, has witnessed strong approval ratings.
Her excellent work ethic, astute use of social media, and personality have won her over the public. Examples of these include her recent spontaneous drumming session to K-pop songs with South Korean President Lee Jae-myung, which went viral.
