A rare rebuke of the White House agenda came on Wednesday when the US House of Representatives voted to reverse President Donald Trump’s tariffs on Canada. The final vote was 219-211 as six Republicans joined Democrats in blocking the tariffs. The vote marked one of the first moments that the House, controlled by Republicans, has confronted the president over a signature policy, drawing instant recrimination from Trump himself.
Any Republican in the Senate or the House who votes against tariffs will face severe repercussions when it comes time for elections, including primaries!” the president posted on social media. The resolution aims to lift the national emergency that Trump proclaimed in order to impose the tariffs, but the president’s backing is needed to actually reverse the policy. Since it is very unlikely that that support will be obtained, the vote is mainly symbolic. It next goes to the Senate for approval.
Trump is a firm believer in the ability of tariffs to compel US trading partners to engage in dialogue. But lawmakers are facing unrest back home from businesses caught in the trade wars and constituents navigating high prices.
