The UAE was named chair of a new international working group on artificial intelligence applications in satellite-aided search and rescue systems, which the worldwide COSPAS-SARSAT organisation created in a historic decision made during its virtual session on June 13, 2025.

This follows Abu Dhabi’s series of successful international seminars from May 27 to June 5, 2025, during which important developments in space-based search and rescue technology were reviewed.

The establishment of this specialist committee was made possible by the thorough working paper that the UAE’s National Guard Command, through the National Search and Rescue Centre, submitted.

The plan, which is well known for its inventiveness, suggests incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) into Mission Control Centre (MCC) operations to improve the efficiency, precision, and speed of processing distress signals across satellite networks. The effort aims to significantly enhance operational efficiency and global response times in life-saving operations by leveraging cross-system integration and intelligent data analysis.

Representatives from 45 nations and important international organisations, such as the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), and the International Maritime Organisation (IMO), applauded the action and recognised the UAE’s leadership in developing advanced technology for humanitarian rescue.
