If President Donald Trump is concerned that delivering Argentina a $20 billion economic lifeline during a US government shutdown could give him political problems, he didn’t show it on Tuesday.
While having lunch with his Argentine counterpart, Javier Milei, Trump stated unequivocally that the purpose of the US cash infusion was to support a key ideological partner facing political consequences. He also made it clear that US financial assistance is contingent on Milei holding onto power.

Milei, who has become a mainstay of the global conservative movement with his mop of dark hair, black leather jacket, former role as frontman of a Rolling Stones tribute band, and pack of English mastiffs that he claims give him political advice, is perhaps the world leader who has embraced Trump and his slash-and-burn style the most.
Trump praising a similar soul on the international scene was a glaring example. On a platform of cutting through Argentina’s bloated bureaucracy and purging the government of “woke leftists,” Milei was elected. He was the first international leader to pay Trump a visit at Mar-a-Lago since the US victory in November of last year. He attended Trump’s inauguration, one of just two world leaders to do so.
