According to a statement released by the hospital on Monday night, twelve Dutch hospital employees at the Radboudumc University Medical Center in Nijmegen have been placed under precautionary quarantine following an improper procedure with a hantavirus patient.

On May 7, the patient was evacuated from the MV Hondius cruise ship and brought to the hospital. The patient’s blood was drawn using a regular technique instead of a more stringent one that was necessary because of the “nature of the virus. Additionally, the hospital claimed that the patient’s urine was not disposed of in accordance with the most recent international laws.

The hospital stated that “even though the risk of infection is low,” its employees will be under precautionary quarantine for six weeks. Additionally, the hantavirus patient is under quarantine. We are sorry that this occurred at our university’s medical facility. Bertine Lahuis, Chair of the Radboudumc Executive Board, stated, “We will thoroughly examine the course of events to learn from this and to prevent it from happening in the future. After its final passengers disembarked as part of a massive evacuation operation that began on Sunday, the MV Hondius set out on its journey back to the Netherlands on Tuesday.
