The attacks of September 11, 2001, a quarter of a century after hijacked aircraft hit New York, Washington, and Pennsylvania, are still more deeply ingrained in American culture than nearly any other event of the previous 25 years.

According to a recent Ipsos survey, around half of American adults rank 9/11 as one of the most important life events, even more so than the Covid-19 outbreak, the elections of Barack Obama and Donald Trump, and Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

Nine out of 10 say the attacks altered the nation “a great deal” or “quite a bit,” and most Americans can still remember where they were when they heard the news. Even still, just about 10% of people intend to actively commemorate Friday’s anniversary; for those who do, the most typical actions are a moment of silence and flag flying. All three locations will have commemorative events.

In order to honour individuals who have since passed away from illnesses related to 9/11, relatives of the victims will assemble on the Memorial Plaza in New York to read aloud the names of those slain, interspersed with seven moments of silence one more than in previous years. Additionally, there will be ceremonies at the Flight 93 National Memorial in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, and the Pentagon in Arlington.
