World Lung Day: Risks to Nonsmokers as well

Although smoking has long been known to be the cause of lung ailments like lung cancer and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, doctors on Wednesday noted that an alarming rise in cases has been seen even among non-smokers, primarily as a result of air pollution and passive smoking.

Every year on September 25, the world observes World Lung Day to promote improved lung care and awareness of lung health worldwide.

Lung conditions like lung cancer and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are largely brought on by smoking. Giving up smoking can greatly enhance lung health and lower the chance of contracting certain illnesses.

Experts noted that even among non-smokers, there has been a notable rise in respiratory problems. “These are mostly linked to higher exposure to air pollution and secondhand smoke, both of which are substantial risk factors for lung disease.

According to Dr. Sunil Kumar K, lead consultant in interventional pulmonology at Aster CMI Hospital in Bengaluru, who spoke with IANS, the lungs have been shown to harbour malignant mutations over time as a result of cell damage and inflammation brought on by microscopic pollutants.
