In remembrance of the victims of the New Year’s Eve fire at a pub in the Swiss Alpine ski resort, which resulted in 40 fatalities and numerous serious injuries, hundreds of mourners marched in Crans-Montana on Sunday. Earlier, the Chapelle Saint-Christophe hosted an hour-long mass in memory of the fire victims, during which Pope Leo XIV’s condolences were read.

The Bishop of Sion, Jean-Marie Lovey, stated, “The Pontiff joins us in our sorrow through moving words and wishes to express his compassion and care for the families and to support those who are suffering.

Participants left the chapel in silence, to the organ’s music, after the hour-long Mass, their faces solemn and their eyes red. Before beginning the solemn march up the hill to the Le Constellation pub, some embraced and others cheered.

In the bright weather, several hundred individuals passed closed stores in a crowded, twisting procession, some of them holding bouquets. Snow guns were spraying snow clouds on the peak above the town.

Father Gilles Cavin discussed the “terrible uncertainty” that families experience when they don’t know if a loved one is dead or injured during the service. He remarked, “We pray for their friends, so profoundly affected by the tragedy on what should have been a day of celebration and togetherness.
