The BBC has uncovered that over 300 migrants who were traveling to the UK last summer were abducted, subjected to torture, and threatened with forcible organ removal. A militia kidnapped the young guys, who were all from Iraqi Kurdistan, in Libya and wanted $5,000 (£3,700) from each of their families. If the ransom was not paid on time, the group threatened to harvest the kidneys from the captives.
We have seen photographic evidence indicating that forced operations did occur, and we have spoken with some hostages who have since been freed. The former prisoners claimed to have been housed in confined quarters with around 180 individuals sharing a cell and presented us with evidence of abuse. The number of hostages still in captivity is unknown, and at least one is known to have perished.
The migrants were meant to be led by the militia from Libya to the coast of the Mediterranean. But a disagreement over money had arisen with Noah Aaron, the Iraqi Kurd people-smuggler who had arranged the migrants’ travel. Aaron is currently incarcerated in France for ten years due to separate charges of money laundering and smuggling.
