In reaction to Volodymyr Zelensky’s criticism of the US diesel deal with Russia, US President Donald Trump stated that he believes “it’s time for Ukraine to get a new president.” The president of Ukraine has spoken out against a proposed contract that would allow Russia to export millions of tonnes of diesel to the United States, claiming it would give money to Russia so that it may fund its war against his country.
Reporters gathered outside the White House on Saturday to hear Trump say that Zelensky “wants to make problems for the world” by approving assaults on Russian refineries. According to the spokesman, the two had agreed that Russia should stop attacking Black Sea shipping and accept “an immediate energy ceasefire” so “more energy and food supplies could be released into the global market” right away.
Kaja Kallas, the head of the European Union’s foreign affairs department, shared Zelensky’s concerns that lifting sanctions “provides Moscow with more revenues to wage war” and emphasised that “this is not the time to ease pressure on Russia, and Europe won’t.” In other words, she was critical of the US-Russia diesel deal.
She indicated that on Monday, European foreign ministers planned to agree the most extensive sanctions imposed on Russia since the beginning of its full-scale invasion. Trump has spent months dealing with the political fallout from the Iran conflict, and now he is trying to bring fuel costs down in the US before the midterm elections through his deal with Russia.
