After a turbulent 129 days during which the richest man in the world cut government expenditure and caused a great deal of controversy, Elon Musk’s tenure in the Trump administration is ending.

The billionaire, who was born in South Africa, congratulated President Trump for his tenure at the Department of Government Efficiency, or Doge, earlier this week on his social media site, X. Trump wrote: “This will be his last day, but not really, because he will, always, be with us, helping all the way.” Trump said he will have a press conference with Musk in the Oval Office on Friday.

Even though Musk was only in office for a little over four months, his work with Doge revolutionised the federal government and affected Washington’s political corridors and globally. Let’s examine a few of the ways Musk has impacted society.
Musk joined the Trump White House with the sole goal of reducing government expenditure as much as possible. His initial goal of “at least $2 trillion” changed to $1 trillion and finally to $150 billion.

Through a mix of asset sales, lease and grant cancellations, “fraud improper payment deletion,” regulatory savings, and the elimination of 260,000 employees from the government workforce of 2.3 million, Doge claims to have saved $175 billion thus far.
