Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriella announced on Monday that a strong 7.4-magnitude earthquake had destroyed hundreds of buildings and killed at least 111 people. Residents were forced to flee their homes as far as Bogotá, the capital, after the earthquake trapped them under debris, injuring numerous people.
According to the US Geological Survey and its Colombian counterpart, the epicenter was located near San Jose Del Palmar, a hamlet of roughly 4,800 people in the Choco region approximately 250 miles west of Bogotá.
Cities in the country’s west were devastated by the earthquake. Authorities were worried about aftershocks as a combination of locals and search personnel combed thru the debris of fallen structures.
Over 20 communities nationwide have been affected, according to Colombia’s interior ministry. From his house in the city’s hills, 64-year-old Cali cab driver Jorge Moncayo reported seeing plumes of dust shoot out across the city as buildings crumbled. Rescue personnel and city dwellers were looking for survivors among the debris. He remarked, “My whole house shook.” “I have never experienced an earthquake this strong.
