As former president Dmitry Medvedev urged Moscow to restock its “exchange pool” of Westerners to exchange for Russians captured overseas, Russia detained a Swedish national and a Japanese journalist within days of one another.
Russia detained the Swedish national in the Sebezh district of the Pskov area, near the borders with Belarus and Latvia, according to a statement released by Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) on Wednesday. He is said to have entered Russia with the intention of carrying out “sabotage and terrorist attacks” on military installations while pretending to enlist in the Russian military.
According to the FSB, it was determined that the detainee led a drone section in the 24th separate assault battalion of Ukraine’s Aidar unit from February to June. This volunteer formation was formed during Russia’s initial invasion of Ukraine in 2014, and the Kremlin has classified it as a terrorist organization a common domestic classification directed at Ukrainian units. He reportedly acknowledged service in the unit. According to the FSB, it has records that attest to his involvement in fighting Russian soldiers. He is accused of planning terrorist actions, crossing borders illegally, and working as a mercenary. The Swedish government has not responded. Moscow’s assertions could not be independently confirmed.
