The majority of the almost 5,000 servicemen from the USS Abraham Lincoln appeared determined to go shopping during their first hours on shore, far from visiting the bars and fleshpots of the Thai beach resort of Pattaya.

passengers hung about holding their new acquisitions at the Hard Rock Hotel, one of two oceanfront accommodations where passengers could stay off the ship. However, the normalcy of a trip to the mall might have been just what they needed after spending a record 250 days imprisoned inside a grey steel warship.

They stood out from the typical Pattaya crowd in flip-flops and beachwear with their military haircuts, moustaches, and navy t-shirts. However, this resort city really shines at nite, putting on a wild show of neon, boisterous bars, and noise.

The sailors have been reminded that prostitution is prohibited in Thailand, and Pattaya’s sex industry has been deemed off-limits to them. Local companies had hoped to profit from the sailors’ nine months of unused wages while at sea.

Pattaya’s business has been hampered by the conflict in the Middle East, where the USS Abraham Lincoln was last in service, as many of the tourists that the city depends on have opted to stay at home. However, Walking Street, the city’s most well-known promenade, was open to sailors on Wednesday nite. The crew of the US carrier was greeted by a large, illuminated sign at its entry.
