After being returned from Jordan, a one-year-old Palestinian girl with serious nutritional issues who was evacuated from Gaza is now back in the territory’s hospital. After completing her medical treatment in Amman, Siwar Ashour, whose story the BBC has been following for several months, was returned to Gaza on December 3.
She had been hospitalized there for six months as part of the Kingdom of Jordan’s medical evacuation program. Three days after returning, according to her grandma Sahar Ashour, she fell unwell. She began experiencing vomiting and diarrhea, and her condition continues to worsen. She told a freelance reporter for the BBC in Gaza, “The diarrhea won’t go away.
Dr. Khalil al-Daqran told the BBC that Siwar is “receiving the necessary treatment, but the situation is still bad for her” at al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in the central Gaza Strip. Siwar had a gastrointestinal infection, according to the doctor. She struggles to combat bacteria because of a weakened immune system. She also needs special baby formula because she has trouble absorbing nutrients.
Hospitals in Gaza, many of which were severely damaged by Israeli bombing and fighting with Hamas before a truce went into place in October, are experiencing an uptick in kid admissions, according to Dr. Daqran. Infections and diseases have spread due to poor hygiene conditions caused by the collapse of essential infrastructure.
