According to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, the league may play up to 16 games overseas per season in the next five years as it looks to expand its participation in international competition. Goodell and Marriott CEO Anthony Capuano attended the CNBC CEO Council Summit, where they discussed a range of subjects, including the economy, franchise values, and private equity.
With games in Brazil, England, Germany, Ireland, and Spain, the NFL’s 2025 schedule features seven overseas games—the most in the league’s history. However, according to Goodell, Monday is only the beginning.
Goodell told Scott Wapner of CNBC, “I do see 16 regular season games, and I do think that will happen very shortly.” Most likely, within five years. The league has a significant global following with over 200 million fans in the United States. For us, international is an open market,” Goodell stated. “We are enthusiastic about our possibilities.
According to Capuano of Marriott, sports travel generates over $50 billion in revenue yearly and accounts for 10% of all travel worldwide. As the NFL’s official hotel partner, Marriott has a long history with the league.
