In reaction to the downing of an American helicopter in the Gulf, the US claims to have launched a number of strikes on Iranian military and surveillance installations. According to the US military Central Command (Centcom), radar sites, ground control stations, and air defense systems were targeted close to the Strait of Hormuz.

In retaliation, Kuwait’s army claimed to be intercepting an attack, while Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed to have attacked 21 targets at US bases in the area, one in Bahrain and the other in Jordan.

The IRGC called the attacks “vicious,” but the US called its operations “a proportional response” to the downing of the Apache chopper on Monday. Earlier, US President Donald Trump declared that the US “must, of necessity” retaliate after accusing Iran of shooting down the helicopter. An American sea drone saved the two surviving crew members.

US officials claim that Iran attacked the chopper using a drone. However, an unidentified US official told CBS News, the BBC’s US partner, that it is unclear if the Iranian drone had targeted on purpose. Iran has not taken responsibility for the downed aircraft, according to the semi-official Mehr News Agency.
